چکیده

Rao, P. J. (University of Illinois, Urbana), A. D. Larson, and C. D. Cox. Catalase activity in Leptospira. J. Bacteriol. 88:1045-1048. 1964.-A number of serotypes of Leptospira were found to possess catalase activity, although considerable variation in activity existed among various serotypes. Catalase activity of L. pomona was reduced by inhibitors commonly employed for arresting catalase activity in other biological systems. Catalase activity was increased three to five times by growing cultures under conditions of oxygen availability; however, aeration had no beneficial effect on total viable cell crop. The relationship of oxygen to metabolism and future studies on virulence of the leptospirae is discussed.

Enzymatic degradation of H2O2 by Leptospira.

The enzymes responsible for reducing H2O2 were surveyed in 49 strains of Leptospira by using semiquantitative assays for catalase and peroxidase. The survey revealed a differential distribution of catalase and peroxidase activities between the two leptospiral complexes. The pathogenic Leptospira interrogans strains gave strong catalase and weak or negative peroxidase reactions. Conversely, the ...

Leptospiral Colonial Morphology.

Stalheim, O. H. V. (University of Wisconsin, Madison) and J. B. Wilson. Leptospiral colonial morphology. J. Bacteriol. 86:482-489. 1963.-A sequence of apparent colonial types was observed with colonies of Leptospira pomona, L. canicola, L. icterohaemorrhagiae, and L. grippotyphosa in agar medium. Although some colonies of these serotypes had a different appearance initially, they eventually dev...

Taxonomy of the Lyme disease spirochetes.

Morphology, physiology, and DNA nucleotide composition of Lyme disease spirochetes, Borrelia, Treponema, and Leptospira were compared. Morphologically, Lyme disease spirochetes resemble Borrelia. They lack cytoplasmic tubules present in Treponema, and have more than one periplasmic flagellum per cell end and lack the tight coiling which are characteristic of Leptospira. Lyme disease spirochetes...

Transcriptional Responses of Leptospira interrogans to Host Innate Immunity: Significant Changes in Metabolism, Oxygen Tolerance, and Outer Membrane

BACKGROUND Leptospira interrogans is the major causative agent of leptospirosis. Phagocytosis plays important roles in the innate immune responses to L. interrogans infection, and L. interrogans can evade the killing of phagocytes. However, little is known about the adaptation of L. interrogans during this process. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS To better understand the interaction of pathoge...

Molecular detection of pathogenic Leptospira in Iran

Leptospirosis is an acute infectious, systemic and septisemic disease which had recent outbreaks in some parts of Iran especially in north provinces. Rapid detection is a critical step for treatment and control of this disease. In this research a PCR based method was evaluated for detection of Iranian local endemic serovars. All reported endemic serovars of Leptospira including Leptospira gri...
